Radio Rain: A term that refers to the polluted rainfall that is dangerous to citizens. Exposure to it can cause people to age dramatically and turn to dust.
Mandatory Medication: A required drug for all citizens starting after high school. It is intended to manage stress and prevent “breaks with reality” due to the intolerable world conditions. Consciously avoiding the medication is a criminal offense punishable by execution.
Execution: The punishment for any crime committed in the street and for the criminal offense of consciously avoiding the mandatory medication.
Holographic Exits / Med Wall: Holographic walls used within the institution to make the patients feel contained and safe. They conceal actual exit routes and, in the case of the “Med Wall,” protect the medication rooms.
The blur / Trails: A visual phenomenon seen by schizophrenic patients like Jay and later by Peter when he stops his medication. Peter interprets it as a “physical message”.
Droids: Clunky, metallic police robots. They are programmed to detect people who are not on their mandatory medication by sensing “irregular pulses” (a fast heartbeat from unmanaged stress). They can be diffused to only beep or programmed to explode to neutralize a subject.
Peter Cross: A staff member at the institution who was secretly medicated since childhood for schizophrenia. He begins skipping his mandatory medication and develops the ability to perceive “The blur/Trails”.
Jay Phillips: A patient at the institution diagnosed with schizophrenia. He is often in a manic stage but is also one of the patients who can see “The blur/Trails”.
Dr. Filmore: A doctor at the institution and Peter’s superior, who is a strong advocate for the mandatory medication and oversaw Peter’s specialized prescription.
Captain Beel: A police superior called in to lead the search for Peter after he escapes the institution.
