Full Summary (Press / Reviewer Version)

(Sequel to Worlds Apart)

Los Angeles is cut off from the world, collapsing under riots, scarcity, and paranoia: and suddenly, everything people thought they knew shatters. During a street riot, Peter witnesses something impossible: a third of the crowd freezes mid motion, like puppets with their strings cut. His wife Ali uncovers the truth, they aren’t human at all. They’re androids, all networked into a covert supercomputer known only as the Beast, silently collecting global data.

Desperate to understand the growing conspiracy, Peter and Ali call in Marsh Flusty, a former investigator living outside the quarantine zone. Together, they uncover a chilling reality: a centuries old underground government manipulated the economic collapse, sealed the Western Sector, and embedded androids throughout the population to steer humanity toward controlled global unification.

But the conspiracy reaches even deeper. A bounty is placed on Marsh, offering safe passage out of the sector to anyone who turns him in. And someone from their past, long believed dead, resurfaces at the center of it all.

Sylvie.

Now called the Reactor, Sylvie controls the android power hub from a fortified facility hidden in the ruins of a Saugus race track. But her motivations are obscure, and her loyalties impossible to read. Worse, the dictator Philop Hestemes watches from an underground command center, delaying the final stages of unification to stall a prophecy he believes will trigger Armageddon.

As Marsh, Peter, Ali, and Sylvie’s paths collide, the line between human and machine dissolves. Trust becomes currency. Survival becomes strategy. And every revelation pushes them closer to a truth engineered across centuries, one that could determine the fate of both the Western Sector and the rest of the world.

In a world where anyone could be artificial, trust becomes the final rebellion.
