Ali: One of the “Crosses” and main characters. She is Peter Cross’s wife, a former nurse, and the group’s technical expert, capable of patching into safe lines and working on computer systems.
Androids: Robotic figures, sometimes mistaken for people, who are “hooked into the Beast” to gather data. They were previously known to be on the police force and run locally within the western sector. A portion of the rioters on Hollywood Boulevard were identified as androids when they momentarily froze and then rebooted.
The Beast: A central supercomputer system that the androids are linked to. It funnels raw data from fiber optic lines and all data seen by androids into its core for recording, storage, and processing. It has been running for centuries and is becoming more sophisticated.
C.I.A.: An organization Ali and Sergeant Laws believe runs everything in the world through an underground, global, centuries old layer. It is believed they tanked the US economy and cut off the western sector.
Conner Macloed: A character with a Scottish accent who wields a sword and claims to be an immortal Highlander born in 1518 in Glenfinan, off the shore of Lock Shiela.
The Crosses: The label used to refer to the couple, Peter and Ali.
Flusty: The last name of the character Marsh. He is one of the remaining “players” in Hestemes’ game.
Hestemes: A figure who runs a “game” involving players, including Marsh and Sylvie. He issues announcements inside the players’ minds and monitors them from a control room.
Jackson: A character who works with Hestemes in a control room, monitoring the game and players.
Marsh: A main character, a former police officer, and one of the four remaining “players” in Hestemes’ game. He is tasked with trying to break the lock down of the western sector.
Peter: A main character, Ali’s husband, and one of the “Crosses”. He is a former social worker.
Poisoned Money: Currency printed in the sector using ink that is toxic. The ink is documented to put clots in the brain and shut down organs, acting like a man made virus.
Players: Individuals involved in a deadly game run by Hestemes, specifically named as Marsh Flusty, Sylvie Sanders, Santiago Sabo, and Julian Turner.
Sylvie Sanders: A character encountered who Marsh has a previous association with, thought to be dead.
Sylvie line / Sylvie cards: A type of data or access line and the corresponding cards that Marsh was trying to get intel from at an old city building.
Western Sector: The area, containing Los Angeles, that has been cut off from the rest of the world. It is a dead zone where ninety percent of the population is dead, and is currently ruled by anarchy and the global government’s control measures.
